Economic DevelopmentThe SD&G CFDC has enjoyed an excellent and long-standing relationship with the United Counties of SD&G to deliver their economic development activities. This is a unique situation among CFDCs in Canada and allows the United Counties to benefit from economic development services as well as leverage greater benefit from closely tied CFDC programs and activities. Typically, these services have centered around the following functions:
In accomplishing our goals and objectives in strategic economic growth and diversity, the SD&G CFDC works closely with regional, provincial and federal economic development agencies, research institutions, regulatory institutions, financial institutions and other relevant agencies. LocationWith the City of Cornwall at the heart of the region, the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry has become known as a vibrant commercial, industrial and agricultural area, or in other words, The Eastern Gateway to Ontario. Home to over 114,000 people, the United Counties lies between three influential urban centres in North America (Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto), and accordingly is well serviced by the transportation, telecommunication and service networks. Still, the natural beauty of the region has been well preserved, leading to unique agricultural development opportunities and a quality of life that is second to none. For more information on the region, check out the United Counties' official web site, located at www.sdg.on.ca or the City of Cornwall's web site, located at www.choosecornwall.on.ca. Investment AttractionInvestment Attraction is a strategy focusing on bringing new business investment to a community. A number of key components enable the SD&G CFDC to target either commercial or industrial retention or attraction:
The SD&G CFDC engages in a comprehensive and strategic marketing plan and conference/trade show attendance to attract business to SD&G. It also maintains the economic development section of the United Counties website www.business.sdg.on.ca The SD&G CFDC maintains the SD&G Community Profile which outlines a number of community health metrics, statistics and resources. It is updated annually (last update March 2010). Corporate Call ProgramThe Economic Development Officer (EDO) calls on 65-80 businesses in the region annually. The EDO provides liaison with government personnel and programs and must be conversant in available funding from entities such as OMAFRA, NRC, MEDT, etc. The EDO also gathers information on existing businesses and becomes knowledgeable on plans and intentions in order to (1) be aware of what is operating in SD&G and (2) provide future assistance. The EDO maintains the SD&G Business Directory and works with the United Counties Planning personnel with the Geographic Information System (GIS).
